The Most Violent Action Movie Ever

That'll be Rambo, which I saw this evening. The fourth instalment in the Rambo series, even though it's been 20 years since Rambo III. Sylvester Stallone is now in his early 60s. The action movie, done 80s-style, is dead. Isn't it?

To film snobs, maybe. But then I've never had time for film snobs. I loved every minute of Rambo. It is literally the most OTT action movie I've ever seen, with an extraordinary amount of gore flying here, there and everywhere. Which may not be your taste, but it certainly is to mine. The script (co-written by Stallone) isn't perfect, to say the least, and the supporting cast's acting won't be attracting Oscars. But this was never meant to be Oscar material: it's a truly state-of-the-art action movie. An 80s film done with 2008 technology. My friend Jay Slater and I wandered out onto Soho's streets afterwards, aptly shellshocked by what we'd just witnessed. A hundred severed, flying limbs were burnt onto our brains. Why, we were forced to stumble into a Greek restaurant on Frith Street, and gorge ourselves on steak, wine and brandy, until those images became just a little more blurry. A terrible state of affairs. If Stallone had intended to show the horrors of war - in this case, between the Burmese military and the Karen hill-tribe people - then he's done a fine job. One village massacre, for instance, makes Apocalypto look like a bit of fun.

Rambo opens in UK cinemas on February 22. If you like big guns and gore, you must see it.

Eep! I think I might be a film snob... but I love a good action movie. So there. I even get snobby about it.

One question though: what was the previous 'most violent action movie ever'? Comparisons must be made. After all, Monsters Inc. was pretty hardcore...

Good question, Mr Peacey. I'm not sure. It may have been Shoot 'Em Up, although I have yet to view it!

...tricky t'ain't it? Also needs some parameters like what is an action movie and what counts as violent... the Aliens Director's Cut is pretty damn violent but it's only really aliens that get mulched. Does it have to be human splat-bags?

This is tough and may probably vex me for days.

Haven't seen Shoot 'Em Up yet either. Can't be that violent 'cos its got that nice Mr Owen in it! On the other hand its got La Bellucci and she only appears in very violent films.
