The next James Bond movie will be entitled...

... Quantum Of Solace.

This has seriously tickled me.

  2. Yep, really. It's been on the radio and everything! Every time I hear it, I laugh like some breed of drain.

Ahhhh, you meant Land. I can see what you mean, although I liked Land a fair deal... and much more than Diary...

  3. Did your jaw hit the ground as hard as mine when you heard? I mean what's it actually meant to mean...

Quantum- "any of the very small parts into which many forms of energy can be subdivided and which cannot be further subdivided."

Solace- "comfort in distress or disappointment or tedium."

So, 'a very small part of unsubdividable energy of comfort in distress and tedium'... it's not very Bond-like... it's not even very English-like! :)

  4. PS: I thought Land Of The Dead was a fine film...

    ...but I have no taste!

  5. This afternoon, heat TV editor Boyd Hilton and I are having fun attempting to work the phrase "quantum of solace" into everyday conversation. I suggest you try it at home/work too.

  6. It will be a quantum of solace to me if I can!

  7. Not to turn this into another discussion of Zombie movies, but... I liked Land, it was just a little disappointingly after such a long wait, plus as my first Romero zombie movie in a cinema.

  8. Because I didn't pay enough attention to the pre-publicity for Land Of The Dead I mistook Asia Argento for Bouff and thought she was co-starring. I was consequently staggered and disappointed to find she wasn't in the damn film...

  9. The Beeb just said the title comes from an Ian Fleming short story title... !

    Still terrible though.

  10. Yes, it's from the For Your Eyes Only collection. Presumably the next film will be called Property of a Lady or possibly The Hildebrand Rarity?

Shame they spunked Everything Or Nothing on a Bond video game really.

PS - I really liked Land!

  11. I think I know what it means.

    Solace is obviously this company:

Who sound evil from their blurb.

And Quantum must be some kind of midget bodyguard. He probably throws bow-ties or crusty undies or something.

  12. It makes no sense. But then film titles rarely do... "Rancid Aluminium"???

Here's a good list of stupid titles:

  13. I actually like a lot of those titles, but the best has to be "Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla".

  14. My much older dictionary makes it make sense: A desired amount of solace...

...in effect 'A Crumb Of Comfort'.

  15. If you want to be all serious about it:

"the quantum of solace, he says, is a precise figure defining the comfort, humanity and fellow feeling required between two people for love to survive. If the quantum of solace is nil, then love is dead."
